Adriana Homewares: the inspiration behind my creations

This month, British Wool talks to Adriana Gentile, the Co-Founder of Adriana Homewares, about the colours and fabrics that inspire her work.

Tell us about the history of Adriana Homewares.

Adriana Homewares was launched two years ago. We design and make luxurious fabrics, creating beautiful pieces for the home.

I graduated in 2013, specialising in woven textiles, and then worked with the Princes Trust to complete the enterprise course. I was lucky enough to receive a business loan which allowed me to buy my first hand loom so I could carry on weaving and become self-employed. Then a couple of years later Adriana Homewares was born. I worked with my brother-in-law Simon to launch the brand. My design experience and creative flair perfectly complements Simon’s business brain and accountancy experience!

The last two years have been great – we’re going from strength to strength. We’ve exhibited at trade shows all over the UK and even shown our products to royalty!

Why do you use British wool?

We specialise in 100% British Bluefaced Leicester Wool, a breed originating from Northern England and the Scottish borders. A long lustre wool, with its longer fibres, produces a yarn that is fine, yet dense and prized for its softness and durability. With all the characteristics for making the perfect yarn for our products, why go anywhere else?

We pride ourselves on our Yorkshire heritage as well as our limited carbon footprint. All our processes – from fleece to finished product – take place in Yorkshire.

Why is British wool great to work with?

Creating a truly beautiful, great British product is essential to us, which is why we start with our wool.  It has everything we think is important for beautiful homewares – it’s naturally flame retardant, anti-static, insulating, odour and stain resistant. And it’s soft but hardwearing - basically all the characteristics that we need for our products to look fantastic for a long time.

Why is colour important in your products?

The process of manufacturing our products (including choosing my colour palette) is a real differentiator for our business, and means we can create unique, modern and individual products. We source our yarn directly from spinners, and since we’re already designing our own, why not create our own unique colours!

Where does your inspiration come from?

Being Yorkshire born and bred, my inspiration comes from Yorkshire places. Our fabrics are all manufactured in Yorkshire too, so I felt that it’s only right to seek my inspiration there. The colours for the collections are picked after visiting different locations, I then hand dye the initial samples and match from Pantone swatches. The colour palettes are basically an interpretation of our favourite places in Yorkshire.

Do you have any new products in development?

We’re currently working on getting our fabrics contract tested and hopefully designing some exclusive contract fabrics. And anyone that knows us, knows we love our pets! So there may be an ‘Adriana Pet’ collection on the horizon.

British Wool Promotion

Raising awareness amongst consumers about the unique benefits offered by the fibre.

Since its launch in 2010, The Campaign for Wool has influenced a new demand for wool on an international scale, and it’s efforts have seen an outstanding threefold increase in the price farmers receive for their wool.
