Sheep are kept by farmers in the UK for their meat value, however the animal also provides another product - wool. There are approximately 60,000 sheep farmers (registered wool producers) in the UK with 19 million sheep. Anyone with over 4 sheep is required to register with the British Wool Marketing Board to sell their wool to the Board. Sheep are easier to look after than many other farm animals. They eat grass and live mostly outdoors protected from the rain, snow and wind by a wool coat - known as a fleece.
