Cleaning and Maintenance

The British Wool Marketing Board supports the WoolSafe programme in the UK and Europe.

About Woolsafe

WoolSafe, which was established in 1991, is a world-wide testing and certification programme for manufacturers of carpet cleaning chemicals, spot removers, soil and stain resist treatments and other products used to maintain or enhance carpets and rugs. Products are tested by Cleaning Research International to performance standards set by The WoolSafe Organisation. All approved products are subject to annual re-evaluation to ensure they continue to meet the WoolSafe requirements.

WoolSafe accreditation means that the product:

  • has been independently tested and approved for use on wool carpets and rugs, meets the highest standards of performance,
  • is both safe and effective,
  • is regularly monitored for compliance with the stands.

Since October 1998 The WoolSafe Organisation has operated an accreditation scheme for professional carpet cleaners, called the WoolSafe Certified Operators programme.

This accreditation programme aims to be the best and all Certified Operators are fully trained in all carpet cleaning techniques and specifically in wool carpet and rug cleaning and maintenance. They have been in business continuously for a period of at least 5 years and are members of a recognised professional or trade association related to the cleaning industry.

Certified Operators use WoolSafe-approved products whenever they clean or maintain wool or wool-rich carpeting.

The WoolSafe Certified Operators programme:

  • trains, examines and accredits leading cleaning companies,
  • requires the use of WoolSafe-approved products thereby ensuring the highest standards in wool carpet and upholstery cleaning and maintenance.

The WoolSafe and WoolSafe Certified Operator Marks and certification marks owned and used by the WoolSafe Organisation.
