Shearing Skills

Shearing training, provided through British Wool, is now an established and growing area of our activity.

We have on offer Blue, Bronze, Silver and Gold Seals, which are available to trainees, depending on their ability. Courses are held locally if possible and are usually over 2 days throughout the shearing season. Please see below for a rough guideline of what you can expect from a course;

Day 1

Introductions, Health & Safety (Risk assessment) and Introduction to equipment.
1st Demonstration, student practice
2nd Demonstration, student practice
End of day, oral question & answer time.

Day 2

Short introduction (Risk assessment)
1st Demonstration, student practice
2nd Demonstration, student practice
3rd Demonstration, student practice
Ending the day with clean up and storing equipment safely

During all student practice sessions the instructor is giving one to one tuition. During the 2nd day the students are assessed on an ongoing system resulting in their certificates being awarded as to the level they have achieved. 

You will need to bring with you a handpiece in good running order and sufficient clean combs and cutters. Appropriate clean clothing must be worn.

Crutching Courses

This is the ideal course for a complete beginner to get the idea of handling sheep and equipment before attending a Blue Seal shearing course. Learn the different methods of crutching sheep, preparing lambs for abattoirs in line with current legislation and preparing ewes for lambing.

All the above related courses are one-day courses and again will, where possible, be arranged to suit local needs.
