Reconnecting education, industry with British wool
Wool ⭈ Exchange is a collaborative programme between British Wool and Central Saint Martins (CSM) that brings together education, industry and the wool supply chain to rethink how locally grown wool is understood, specified and used.
Developed in response to a growing disconnect between the fashion industry and natural fibres, Wool Exchange creates space for open dialogue, material learning and meaningful connection – placing British wool back into contemporary design conversations.
A collaborative platform for change
We represents around 30,000 UK sheep farmers, working to create long-term value for farming communities and the landscapes they manage. Through Wool Exchange, this perspective is brought directly into a world-leading creative institution, connecting fibre provenance with design decision-making.
Hosted at Central Saint Martins, Wool ⭈ Exchange brings together farmers, processors, designers, manufacturers, brands, academics and students under one roof to explore the realities, opportunities and challenges of working with British wool today.
Across recent editions, the programme has focused on:
- Addressing misconceptions around British wool, including handle, consistency and suitability
- Examining the gap between sustainability messaging and material sourcing
- Improving material literacy and understanding of fibre supply chains
- Encouraging more informed and responsible fibre choices within fashion and design
Wool ⭈ Exchange events
Industry, education and the full supply chain
Wool ⭈ Exchange events are designed as immersive, knowledge-led experiences rather than traditional trade showcases.
They combine panel discussions, material displays, sourcing information and informal networking to encourage honest conversation and practical learning.
Recent events have welcomed a wide cross-section of the apparel industry, including designers, brands, manufacturers and media, alongside Central Saint Martins students and alumni.
This mix is central to Wool Exchange’s purpose – enabling early-stage designers to engage directly with industry realities, while allowing brands and businesses to reconnect with fibre origins.
Beyond events: a year-round community
Wool Exchange is evolving into a year-round knowledge and community platform, designed to sustain dialogue beyond live events.
This includes:
- A growing cross-sector mailing list of students, alumni and industry
- Regular updates and case studies highlighting work with British wool
- Ongoing knowledge sharing between education, research and industry
The aim is to build long-term relationships and continuity, rather than one-off engagement.
