Product Development

Driving demand for British wool through new products is a crucial part of our activity. This helps increase demand for our product and in turn helps increase the price of the wool.

During the past 12 months we have been working with our supply chain partners and have consolidated and developed an industry sourcing guide of British wool yarns targeting the fashion sector.

These are available to view within our Trade section.

Farm Traceability

Since 2021, all wool handled and sold by British Wool is fully traceable back to our members’ farms. As brands and consumers increasingly prioritise knowing the origin of their products, British Wool is uniquely positioned to meet this demand.

Our traceability scheme is designed to meet the fluctuating demands of brands and buyers, which means it’s not always available to opt into directly. Some years, your wool may be included in a traceable wool lot, while other years it might not, depending on market demand.

Additionally, not all wool grades within your wool clip may qualify for traceability, as only certain qualities and specifications are requested.

By offering traceable wool, we can command a premium above the standard auction price, which remains stable regardless of global wool price fluctuations. These additional earnings are returned directly to our members, which will be indicated on members’ wool payment receipt.

Last season, we sold 700,000 kilos of traceable wool, primarily to the sleep industry, with brands like Woolroom, Harrison Spinks, and Dreams among our customers. Since launching our traceable wool initiative, we have sold over 2 million kilos.

With 14 brands now purchasing traceable wool, and growing demand, we anticipate significant growth in the future.
