Blue
The entry-level certification introduces novice shearers to foundational skills for sake and effective shearing. It covers preparing a clean work area, handling sheep with minimal stress, and following health, safety and welfare standards.
Candidates must shear 3 sheep within 30 minutes under supervision, demonstrating proper technique, fleece management, and equipment use. The Blue Seal prepares shearers for advanced certification like the Bronze, Silver and Gold Seals.
Bronze
The intermediate certification targets shearers advancing beyond novice level, focusing on commercial shearing skills. It covers safe, efficient work practices, shearing sheep at commercial speed of 12 per hour, while upholding health & safety and animal welfare standards.
Assessment includes minimising second cuts and injures, managing fleece quality and maintaining equipment. This certification signifies professional competency and lays the groundwork for higher levels like the Silver and Gold Seals.
Silver
The Silver Seal, part of British Wool’s advanced shearing program, is for experienced shearers seeking high efficiency and professionalism. Candidates must shear up to 20 sheep per hour while maintaining fleece quality, minimising second cuts and following strict standards.
Assessment covers advanced sheep handling, efficient shearing patterns and equipment maintenance. Accredited by Highfield, this certification validates industry-standard skills, boosts employ-ability, and prepares shearers for global competition or progression to the Gold Seal.
Gold
The Gold Seal, the highest certification in British Wool’s program, recognises expert shearers for exceptional speed, technique and proficiency. Candidates must shear over 26 sheep per hour, maintain superior fleece quality and ensure animal welfare.
Assessments cover advanced techniques, efficient handling and equipment mastery. Accredited by Highfield, the Gold Seal certifies industry leaders for top-tier global competitions and professional excellence.
Please bring sufficient clean combs, cutters, and a hand piece in good running order.
