Supporting Excellence in Shearing Across the UK
Shearing is one of the most important skills on any sheep farm. Good shearing supports high standards of animal welfare, helps wool be presented correctly, and protects the reputation of British wool throughout the supply chain. That is why we continue to invest in training, promotion and industry support to help ensure the UK has the skills, standards and visibility needed for a strong shearing sector.
Comprehensive Training for Every Skill Level
Each year, we deliver a comprehensive programme of shearing and wool handling training. We run more than 100 courses are run across the UK during the spring and summer. Covering machine shearing, blade shearing and wool handling. Training focuses on best practice, animal welfare, health and safety, equipment maintenance and wool quality.
This programme gives UK sheep farmers have access to well-trained shearers. While supporting high standards of animal welfare, safety and wool presentation across the industry.
Shearing Ambassadors Champion Best Practice
Alongside formal training, we promote shearing and wool handling through our ambassador network. This group includes an ex-world champion, a record holder, instructors and respected figures from the shearing community, who help raise awareness of our role within the industry. They actively promote shearing courses, good practice and the unique qualities of British wool through social media, press activity and appearances at events.
Showcasing Skills at Agricultural Events
Agricultural shows also provide valuable opportunities for us to engage with sheep farmers and the public, showcase the importance of shearing, encourage participation in training, promote wool handling skills and celebrate the professionalism of the UK shearing sector.
Raising Awareness Through Media Coverage
Media and communications activity further support this work. Through press coverage and social media campaigns. We continue to highlight the value of skilled shearing and the contribution it makes to animal welfare and wool quality. This summer, we have worked with a range of media outlets, including BBC Countryfile, Radio 4’s Farming Today, BBC Wales News and the Daily Mirror.
