Romney Tweed

Romney Marsh, Kent

Romney Tweed is unique. It’s English tweed is a capsule collection of distinction
from fully traceable 100% British wool showcasing the work of the sheep
farmers of the Romney Marsh and the quality of the English weaving industry.
Romney Tweed’s beautiful, worsted fabric originates from Grade 1 Romney wool
spun and then woven into a soft handling lustrous tweed with a superior drape.
The Romney sheep have grazed on the Romney Marsh since the 7th Century,
becoming a staple of the medieval wool and cloth trades, both legitimate and
smuggled. Kent, including the Romney Marsh, remains the heartland of the
breed.
Romney Tweed made the decision to create its luxurious English tweed from
the Romney sheep after research and expert advice from the Yorkshire textile
industry proved that the high lustre of the Romney wool made it suitable for
apparel, as well as the more traditional blankets and carpets. Our Romney wool
is sourced from British Wool. We use only Grade 1 fleeces which are then
scoured, spun, dyed, woven and finished in Yorkshire to the highest industry
standard. The resulting cloth is a unique and luxurious English tweed which
belies its origin and weight of 400-430 gsm.
All Romney Tweed collections, including our bespoke tweed service, are
designed in-house by our dedicated team, who are all graduates of Central St.
Martin’s.
Romney Tweed was incorporated as a Community Interest Company in 2014 by
Patricia Alston ONZM. The business is committed to supporting the rural
communities, economy and young people of the Romney Marsh.
