Meet The Maker Devon Duvets: Using British Wool to Create Luxury Bedding

In 2008, Dick and Pauline Beijen decided they needed a change of lifestyle and left their busy international careers for a smallholding on Dartmoor. They started with beekeeping, soap making and other crafts, expanding into breeding sheep for the production of wool-based products, including for developing their idea of making wool duvets.

In 2009, they featured on Channel 4’s ‘My Dream Farm’, hosted by Monty Don. Following the airing, Dick and Pauline started supplying top UK retailer John Lewis & Partners with a range of wool bedding products. Commercial production started in 2010 and Devon Duvets was born.

Taking inspiration from the beautiful Devon countryside and Devon Duvets’ handcraft every duvet, pillow and mattress protector using 100% natural and sustainable materials made in their Devon workshops.

Devon Duvets were recently awarded The Independent's "Best Summer Duvet’" Award, marking this as their 5th consecutive year of winning this award, having previously won in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and now in 2023.

Traceable Wool

When it comes to sourcing wool for their bedding, Devon Duvets are committed to working with local farmers in Devon and they only use 100% traceable British wool.

“We worked closely with British Wool in the creation of their Traceable Wool Scheme which ensures that the farmers wool in the scheme receive a higher than market value price for their wool. This means that we can continue to support the livelihood of our farmers and they can continue to provide us with the high-quality fleeces that we need to create our products.” Dick Beijen (Managing Director)

These farmers have been carefully selected based on the wool types required. The type of wool used is critical for the product performance. Through British Wool’s auctions, Devon Duvets sources wool from a variety of breeds of sheep, including Texel and Suffolk. Utilising both Fine and Medium wool types ensures that their bedding combines softness and springiness for comfort with bulk and resilience to create long-lasting bedding. At British Wool, we grade every fleece by hand to ensure that the wool Devon Duvets purchases is the very best and is right for their products.

Wool Bedding

In the past year or two, there has been a notable rise in popularity of wool bedding, and for good reason. As people become more conscious of their environmental impact and seek out sustainable and natural materials, wool bedding has become an attractive option.

Wool bedding offers a range of benefits to sleepers, such as its ability to regulate body temperature, wick away moisture, and provide a comfortable and cosy sleep environment.

As more people become aware of these benefits and seek out sustainable bedding options, the popularity of wool bedding is expected to continue to increase. Devon Duvets is at the forefront of this trend, offering luxurious wool bedding products that are individually handcrafted to order by expert seamstresses and sourcing wool from local farmers in Devon.
